Spoiler alarm! The following is a short summary of my  PhD research on leadership communication. If you enjoy studying scientific text in Finnish and want to read the whole dissertation, you might want to skip this part.

Whether it’s sharing strategic plan with employees, talking about organizational culture and values, providing business updates to works council, presenting an investment plan in a board meeting, hosting an investor Q&A session, being interviewed by media, taking part in an expert roundtable or taking a stand on societal issues such as diversity and inclusion or sustainability, leaders need to know how to communicate in an effective and appropriate, and ethically correct manner.

Communication is not only a function or a task of leaders or a medium through which leadership is exercised. Communication is part of leadership’s substance. Leadership emerges in the process of human interaction and is enacted through communication. In other words, human interaction is the basis that leadership builds on.
