The rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (AI) is impressive. AI can now gather, summarize, edit, and respond to vast amounts of information. It can also assist in generating new ideas. Recent reports predict further automation development and productivity increases, particularly in knowledge-based professions. Some estimates suggest that by 2027, 43% of all work tasks will be automated. Understandably, the question “Is AI overtaking the jobs of organizational communicators?” was a major focus during our EACD webinar on December 12th, 2023.

While AI is transforming communication professions, it is not taking over – at least not yet. Instead, the role of organizational communicators is more crucial than ever. The ongoing Fourth Industrial Revolution is not just a technological revolution, but also a communication revolution, changing the way we interact with each other. We organizational communicators have the knowledge, power and responsibility to shape it. Here are three predictions for the future of organizational communications, together with specific suggestions on what to focus on next:

1. Automation accelerates and boosts productivity. It is time to shift towards strategic communications.
2. Skill requirements change. Embrace AI, creativity and lifelong learning.
3. New ethical challenges arise. Define and communicate your guidelines.
